Title: Uncorking efficiency: A network Data Envelopment Analysis agent-based modelling approach for optimising collaborative wine supply chains

Abstract: The wine industry faces growing challenges related to risk management, sustainability, and supply chain efficiency. This seminar presents a novel methodological framework that integrates Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) and Network Data Envelopment Analysis (NDEA) to measure supply chain efficiency under different risk and sustainability conditions. The proposed framework extends conventional NDEA by explicitly modelling product exchanges between supply chains, thereby capturing collaborative interactions that are often observed in practice but rarely incorporated into efficiency measurement models. Using the Alentejo wine region as an illustrative setting, ABM is employed to generate alternative supply chain configurations, whose efficiency is subsequently measured through NDEA. The results illustrate how collaboration between supply chains can improve overall efficiency, particularly under adverse risk conditions, while also revealing trade-offs between global and local performance across different stages of the supply chain. Beyond the wine industry application, the seminar discusses the broader methodological implications of combining simulation and efficiency analysis to support decision-making in complex systems characterised by uncertainty, interdependence, and sustainability challenges.
