The seminar will be held within Business History course on October 09th at 08.45 a.m. in the Eco3 room of the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Pisa
The guest lecture by Luis Bértola, Professor of the Economic and Social History Programme at the Universidad de la República, will present the main arguments of his book (The Economic Development of Latin America since Independence), offering an interpretation of the region’s economic history that also raises issues of direct relevance for business history.
It examines Latin America’s record of economic development in comparison with other world regions, highlighting both achievements and persistent weaknesses. Particular attention is devoted to the instability linked to international specialization in natural resources and dependence on external financing—factors that shaped the environment in which firms operated. The analysis also considers the delayed and fragmented emergence of modern political and economic institutions, with important implications for markets, entrepreneurship, and industrial organization.
Finally, Bértola addresses the issue of inequality, stressing its depth and persistence in Latin America compared with other regions, and showing how this condition has influenced domestic demand, social structures, and business opportunities.
