Title: Towards the introduction of the euro. The Bulgarian experience

Abstract:

The purpose of the seminar is to present Bulgaria’s path to the euro area (1 January 2026), to discuss the evolution of the monetary regime since 1990 to the present day, and to compare it with other Eastern European countries. Attention is paid to the introduction of the Currency board in 1997 after a period of hyperinflation.

The theoretical and technical debates on Bulgaria’s integration into the euro area and the benefits and risks of adopting the euro are discussed. The institutional and technical preparations for the introduction of the euro are also presented.
